What is a PSD file?

PSD (Photoshop Document) is Adobe Photoshop's native format. Unlike a JPG or PNG, a PSD stores every layer, mask, text and adjustment of a design so you can keep editing it. Great for working, terrible for sharing: almost no program or website opens it, and files often weigh tens or hundreds of megabytes.

Converting PSD to PNG gives you a flat, light, universal image while keeping the design's transparency. It's exactly what you need to review a design a designer sent you, publish it on a website or drop it into a presentation.

How to convert PSD to PNG without Photoshop

  1. Drag the .psd file onto the area above or tap “Choose files”.
  2. Wait while it's read. The first time, the PSD reader loads (under 1 MB). Large files can take a few seconds.
  3. Download the resulting PNG, or all of them as a ZIP if you converted several.

How the conversion works

When Photoshop saves a PSD with “Maximize Compatibility” turned on (the default), it embeds a ready-made composite of the image — exactly as it looks on screen with all its layers and effects. Pasafoto extracts that image and saves it as PNG, so the result is faithful to the original design.

If the PSD was saved without that option, the tool tries to flatten the visible layers itself. In that case the result may differ if the design uses blend modes, layer styles or adjustment layers, and we'll flag it next to the file.

Benefits

  • No Photoshop needed and no paid license.
  • Your designs stay confidential: they're never uploaded to a server. Ideal for client work under NDA.
  • Transparency is kept for the empty areas of the canvas.
  • Batch conversion: convert several PSDs in one go.

Honest limitations

This tool exports the final image; it doesn't let you edit layers or text. The PSB format (Photoshop large documents) isn't supported. On phones with little memory, very heavy PSDs (over 100–150 MB) may fail — if that happens, try from a computer. If you then need the design as a JPG, use the PNG to JPG converter.

Tips for designers

When you send designs to clients who don't have Photoshop, always include a PNG or JPG alongside the PSD — with this page they can even do it themselves. Keep “Maximize Compatibility” on when saving so the result matches the screen exactly. If the PNG is too heavy to send, compress it or shrink its dimensions, and grab the exact HEX codes of the design with the palette extractor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a PSD without Photoshop?

Yes. With this tool you can view and convert the PSD to PNG directly in your browser, with nothing to install.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes. Transparent areas of the canvas are kept in the PNG.

Why does my PSD look different than in Photoshop?

It was probably saved without “Maximize Compatibility”. Re-save it in Photoshop with that option on and the result will be identical.

Can I export layers separately?

No, the tool exports the final flattened image as a single PNG.

Are my designs uploaded to a server?

No. The PSD is read in your browser and never leaves your computer.

Does it work with PSB files?

No, only PSD. PSB files are large documents that exceed the memory available to a browser.
