What is the AVIF format?

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is one of the newest image formats. It's based on the AV1 video codec, developed by an alliance including Google, Netflix, Amazon and Microsoft, and it's even more efficient than WebP: up to 50% smaller than a JPG with the same visual quality. It also supports transparency and high dynamic range (HDR).

More and more websites serve their images as AVIF, so it's easy to end up with .avif files in your downloads folder. The catch is that plenty of programs still can't open it: older editors, outdated Windows photo viewers, office apps and services that only accept JPG.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Select or drag your AVIF images onto the area above.
  2. Choose the JPG quality (90% by default) and the background color for transparent areas.
  3. Download the JPGs one by one or all together as a ZIP.

Pasafoto uses the AVIF decoder already built into your browser, so it works in any recent version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera or Safari (16 or later). If your browser is too old, you'll get a clear message.

Common AVIF problems

“The file downloaded as .avif and my photo viewer won't open it”: older viewers don't support it — convert it here. “The tool says my browser can't open AVIF”: update your browser or open the page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. “The image had a transparent background”: pick the background color you want before converting, or turn it into a PNG if you need to keep the transparency. To make lots of converted images smaller, set the quality to 80% and press “Apply settings”.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I open an AVIF file?

Because it's a new format that many programs don't support yet. Converting it to JPG makes it compatible with everything.

Do I lose quality converting AVIF to JPG?

At 90% quality the difference is negligible, although the JPG will be larger than the AVIF.

Which browser do I need?

Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, or Safari 16 and later.

Is transparency kept?

JPG doesn't support transparency, so it's filled with the background color you choose.

Is it safe to convert AVIF online here?

Yes, the conversion runs in your browser and your images are never uploaded to a server.
